Through the completion of key retail destinations over the past year, Aldar Properties PJSC, Abu Dhabi’s leading property development, investment and management company, has added to the choices for Abu Dhabi’s shoppers, with more options to come in 2011.

Al Raha BeachAlready a key landmark in the heart of the city, The Souk at Central Market is a marketplace for perfumes, jewellery and watches, the place to go to find the perfect gift. Fully opening its doors in November 2010, the Souk is home to Abu Dhabi’s first Shakespeare & Co restaurant, a Grand Stores Digital, a variety of cafes as well as over 20 watch and jewellery stores. Over the coming months, The Souk will be holding a series of free cultural events covering music and dance, arts and crafts, fashion, as well as film and food tasting, making the most of its traditional yet modern interior spaces.

And new retail names will soon be making their debut in the Middle East, with House of Fraser set to open its first store in the region and become the anchor store for Emporium at Central Market. Emporium, primarily a fashion retail destination, will also be home to brands such as E4U, Spinneys, Magrudy’s, Ted Baker, Bebe, Evita Peroni Pandora Jewellery, Network, Fabrika, Beymen Business, Alison Nelson Chocolate Bar, Fat burger and Studio Misr.

In March 2011, IKEA opened flagship MENA store on Yas Island. The 33,000sqm store, delivered on schedule by Aldar, will be the largest IKEA store in the MENA region and expects to serve nearly 1.3 million visitors in the first year of operations.

The IKEA store is the first piece of Yas Island’s wide ranging retail offer which will culminate with the delivery of Yas Mall. A regional shopping mall with approximately 235,000 sq m of gross leasable area, Yas Mall will offer a complete shopping experience with the full spectrum of shops to suit all tastes and needs, from volume retail to high-end designer labels, as well as Abu Dhabi’s first Geant hypermarket.

And across Aldar‘s residential communities, local retail locations continue to grow. Opening next month, the Al Raha Gardens community retail centre- Gardens Plaza -will be home to a Safa Express supermarket, Jones the Grocer, Boots the Chemist, Claire’s Accessories, Grand Optics, Mothercare, Pace e Luce Ladies and Gents salons, Pets Delight, Tip Top Nail Bar, as well as a Zyng Asian Grill and Tele Pizza.

At Al Bandar, residents now find a variety of retailers, cafes and salons, including Spinneys, Nails Couture Bar, Soma Pilates Club, Alpha Optical Eye Care, Health Plus Boutique Clinic, Nolu’s Café, Bricco Café, Hut Spot Juice Bar, Planet Pharmacy, Royal Yachting and International Music Institute. Later in 2011, the retail offerings of Al Muneera and Al Zeina will add further convenience, homeware and furniture stores to Al Raha Beach’s burgeoning retail portfolio.

Commenting on this progress, Frederick Douglas, Director of Retail Leasing, Aldar, said:
” The opening of IKEA‘s flagship MENA store on Yas Island and the first House of Fraser in the region soon to be opened at The Emporium – these are clear demonstrations of the interest major global brands have in Abu Dhabi.

“We place retail at the heart of our integrated development model, complementing residential, office and leisure space as well as central amenities such as schools and hospital, and look forward to bringing yet more exciting retailers to Abu Dhabi over the next year.”
